The Ford Mustang has the honor of being the best-selling sports car for 2015. This is partly thanks to the female demographic increase, which makes up 40 percent of the year’s Mustang buyers. In fact, in the first half of 2015, sales have jumped 54.3 percent for a total of 68,290 units sold. 36 percent of female sports car consumers opted with the Ford brand. This dispels the myth that young men are the only ones with an insatiable appetite for high-performance cars.

Here are a few other notable trends when it comes to female consumers: They tend to opt for the four-cylinder EcoBoost engine over the V6 and V8 variants. 15 percent also purchased a convertible Mustang, compared to 13 percent for their male counterparts.

It’s not just the US market that is seeing a resurgence in Mustang fever. In the UK, manufacturers are having difficulty keeping up with production due to the unexpected demand. More than 2,000 orders in the country have already been placed. Likewise, Australia and New Zealand have also experienced higher than expected sales figures.

According to Erich Merkle, the Ford sales analyst for its US division, love for Ford automobiles is a universal passion despite the brand being an American icon. In fact, Ford has also developed right-handed drive models for countries that drive on the left side of the road where the steering wheel is located on the right.

The rise in female consumerism shows that sports cars aren’t relegated to a young male demographic audience. The 2015 Ford Mustang, though, really is for everyone regardless of gender.
