The Ford brand just received a nice gift to help cap off the year on a high note. Motor Trend just named the 2018 Ford F-150 as its truck of the year.
The Ford F-150 emerged on top against other rival contenders, such as the GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. The Blue Oval and its signature pickup truck came out the winner due to factors like a redesigned grille, an aesthetically appealing wheel-tire combo, and exceptional handling.
The judges at Motor Trend specifically tested out the 2018 Ford F-150 Supercab. Positive feedback included smooth handling when driving on a skidpad, easy parking, and stability when driving in tow/haul mode.
Testers also noted the truck’s hill-start assist, hitch assist, trailer sway control, tie-down hooks for the pickup box, and locking removable tailgate.
Motor Trend judge Christian Seabaugh noted the usefulness of the backup camera’s zoom feature. This makes it exceptionally easy to connect a trailer with minimal input from a spotter.
The Ford F-150 and its accolades are in part thanks to its mostly aluminum body frame, allowing it to shed nearly 700 pounds of base weight. The move to aluminum began with the 2015 Ford F-150. At the time, it was seen as a major risk due to the estimated $1 billion investment and overhaul in factory operations. The Ford brand before then had relied on steel framing for the past seven decades of the truck’s existence.
