The roots of the Ford Explorer spans over a quarter of a century. It all started in 1991 when the Ford Explorer made its debut as a replacement for the Ford Bronco II. The SUV was an instant success, selling more than 300,000 units every year during the first-generation’s run. By the end of its second generation, the Ford Explorer sold more units than all import SUVs combined.
The first generation, which ran from 1991 to 1994, was based on the Ford Ranger platform. Unlike the Ford Bronco, The Ford Explorer was available in both two-door and four-door models. The latter made the model a mass appeal for families, while the former provided a sportier variant for a younger demographic.
The first-generation models also borrowed many technology inclusions from the Ford Ranger. This included the Touch Drive electronic push-button, which was especially innovated for its time.
The second-generation, which began in 1995, became the first ever production vehicle to include center high-mount neon brake lights. Buyers also had the choice between the three-door and five-door models.
By 1998, the Ford Explorer reached a major milestone by becoming the best-selling SUV in the U.S., selling three million units. In 2001, the Ford Explorer became the first automobile in its segment to include dual front airbags.
Major changes came in 2002 with the rollout of the third-generation, which introduced the 4.6-liter V6 engine and the addition of third-row seating.
The fifth and current generation was released in 2011. Models like the 2017 Ford Explorer is a culmination of its predecessors combined with the latest car technology, such as perpendicular parking assistance and the Enhanced Parking System.
