There have been rumors that Ford automakers were planning on discontinuing its signature muscle car. This meant that the 2017 Ford Mustang would be the last iteration. If this has been keeping you up at night, you can rest assured that those rumors are untrue. The Ford Mustang is here to stay.

This was confirmed by Ford Marketing Director Lisa Brankin. She stated that it’s inconceivable to think of a point in the future where the Ford Mustang is not included in the Ford lineup.

The rumors were likely stemmed from the automaker’s move and investment towards autonomous technology. What makes muscle cars like the Ford Mustang so desirable is the fun factor that comes from driving it. Autonomous technology, of course, takes away the driving aspect of it.

According to Brankin, fully self-driving cars requiring zero input from the driver likely won’t be here until another decade. Even then, driverless cars will still roll out on a gradual basis. She further mentioned that the Ford Mustang is loved for its high horsepower and bargain price, two assets unlikely to be prevalent in the early phases of driverless cars. Those who actually love to drive will continue to opt for sports cars that require human operation.

The Ford Mustang has been around for over 50 years. Sales continue to soar especially in countries like Australia and Germany.

The Ford brand is currently working on a model with partial autonomous capabilities, set for a 2021 release.
