According to a Pew Research study, one in three U.S. adults have a smartphone. More people are also toting around other electronic devices and accessories such as phone chargers, Kindle readers, and so on.

To accommodate all these little extras, the refreshed 2017 Ford Fusion has increased its storage bin space by four liters. The storage space in the center console also increased by 59 percent thanks to the new rotary gear selector switch that replaces the bulkier lever-style shifter. A phone pocket has also been included right under the infotainment system.

According to Hani Badawi, Ford Fusion Ergonomics Engineer, eliminating the traditional shifter was the biggest move. It allowed much of the driver-assist controls to be shuffled around. This lead to an arrangement that meant more space for small items like wallets and mobile phones. It also allowed engineers to provide a longer armrest.

That’s not all, though. That addition of the rotary shift knob also enabled designers to relocate the cup holders. Both cup slots are now positioned vertically instead of side-by-side. This makes beverages more easily reachable; it also eliminates the possibility of inadvertently bumping the drink when reaching for the shifter.

Other changes for the refresh includes an A-pillar that’s been slimmed down for improved forward visibility. The footrest has also been increased in size.

All the changes made in the refresh were in response to customer feedback and what Ford Fusion owners indicated what they would like to see improved.
