Ford recently announced the 2015 Ford F150 with a new aluminum body. The result is a pickup 700 pounds lighter than its predecessor. To really take advantage of the lighter weight, Ford has introduced a new Sports Mode.
The Sport Mode was originally a concept for the Ford Mustang . The mode can be activated by pressing the tow/haul button twice, which illuminates the amber “s” icon in the bottom right portion of the tachometer. What this does is it reduces the frequency of gearshifts by allowing the driver to increase the speed at the lower gears. This makes acceleration easier and also allows the truck to reach its max torque faster. The result is increased speed with less pedal travel. The quicker torque also ensures smoother pulling especially when pulling out from a stop.
Best of all, the Sport Mode enables rev-matching, which is almost unheard of for a full size pickup like the 2015 Ford F150.
Sport Mode will be a standard inclusion with every 2015 Ford F-150 model regardless of engine, trim, or drive configuration. It can be engaged in 2WD, 4WD high, and 4WD auto. This gives drivers enhanced improvement in acceleration for both on and off-road performance.
According to Karl Jungbluth, Ford’s Transmission Calibration Engineer, the decision was made to implement Sports Mode after noticing how well the F150 responded to acceleration due to its lighter aluminum body.
