The next generation Mustang was originally slated for a 2022 release, though recent reports suggest that the date may have been bumped up to 2020. While this cannot be confirmed, the report information came from a combination of Ford insiders and publicly available information. The report even contained the new Mustang model’s codename: S-650. The current model uses the codename S-550.
The move up in release date is significant given that sports cars tend to have longer cycles between generations. The current generation was just released in 2014, meaning it will have just a brief six-year run. That’s an unusually short life cycle considering that the previous generation Mustang had a nine-year run. One of the earlier Mustang generations, the SN95, lasted an impressive 10 years.
Sports cars have longer cycles compared to other vehicle categories due to their more sophisticated engineering and lower volume production.
The same report also indicated that the brand’s luxury subdivision, Lincoln, is in the midst of releasing a new large-size sedan, also slated for a 2020 release.
Ford has not released any reason yet for moving up the date. It certainly can’t be because the current Mustang is not doing well. It received rave reviews from Edmunds, and consumer ratings gave it 4.5 stars out of five. Whatever the reason, the next generation Mustang coming sooner than later just means something to look forward to in the new decade.
